Yom HaShoah — Holocaust Remembrance Day and Heroism of the Jewish People. On this day in Israel, people remember six million Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis during the Second World War.

In Israel, Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) was established by the Knesset in 1951. It is marked on the Hebrew calendar on the 27th of the month of Nisan. This date was proposed by the first Prime Minister of Israel, David Ben Gurion, on this day in 1943, an uprising began in the Warsaw ghetto.

All events begin the night before immediately after sunset. For all the people of Israel, Yom Hashoah is a national day of mourning, a day of sorrow, prayer and remembrance, all flags in Israel are lowered.

At 10 a.m. a siren sounds, according to which the whole country freezes for two minutes in silent silence, paying tribute to those who died in the Holocaust. It doesn’t matter where people are at this moment: at work, at home, whether they are walking along the street or travelling by car or public transport. All traffic stops, people go out and stand while the siren sounds.

The official ceremony is held at Yad Vashem, the Israeli National Holocaust and Heroism Memorial. It is located in Jerusalem on Har Hazikaron (Mountain of Remembrance). The state opening ceremony of Holocaust Remembrance Day and resistance heroes will be streamed on Monday evening, April 20, 2020. You can watch the broadcast and reading of names on the website.

This year, in accordance with the orders of the Israeli Ministry of Health, the ceremony was recorded in advance and will include a message from the President and Prime Minister of the State of Israel. It will also show the stories of six Holocaust survivors who were supposed to light memorial torches at this year’s ceremony, music fragments, and memorial prayers by the chief rabbis of Israel.
