Protest rally in Marneuli, region of Georgia

In the Marneuli, region of Georgia, hundreds of residents staged a protest rally on Wednesday due to the extension of the state of emergency for another month.

Farmers demand to remove quarantine, remove checkpoints and unblock roads so that they can export agricultural products for sale. Some of them claim that they do not believe in the existence of a coronavirus at all.

Local authorities hold meetings with the population, ensuring that wholesalers purchase their products. However, the rally continues. According to some reports, among the initiators of the speeches are supporters of ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili.

In the Marneuli and Bolnisi regions, 40 and 60 kilometres south of Tbilisi, quarantine was introduced on March 23 due to the coronavirus; special measures were taken by order of the Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Entries and exits to these areas are closed, where more than 160 thousand people live, mostly Azerbaijanis. Residents are only allowed to move around for food and medicine.
