Nigerian pirates abducted nine Georgian sailors

In the special economic zone of Nigeria, pirates attacked a ship flying the flag of Panama.

Ten sailors were kidnapped, nine of whom are Georgian citizens, the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency said.

“On April 30, in a special economic zone of Nigeria, pirates attacked a ship flying the flag of Panama. Of the ten abducted sailors, nine are Georgian citizens. Four more sailors, who are also Georgian citizens, remained on the ship. They are not in danger,” the agency’s press service said.

Representatives of the department are negotiating with a shipowning company, and also informed the family members of the abducted sailors. “By this time, all appropriate measures have been taken. The Sea Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other parties, is working with a shipowning company to release Georgian sailors from captivity in every possible way,” the agency added.
